I cringe every time I hear these names. They are so aesthetically ugly to my ears. It's purely based on their sound. They are unattractive to me, and I can't get what other people like about them at all.
I'm SO with you, on all of these! Could not agree more.

Nameberry faves that I just don't get:

    Gwendolyn
    Penelope
    Guinevere
    Gwyneth
    Genevieve
    Josephine
    Fiona

They're all either badly dated, or just very ugly, IMO.

I am particularly tired of Penelope and Genevieve.

But I will take this opportunity to say that I find 'Sarah' the most boring name in the world. Ever. It's like calling your girl, 'Girl'.
Very true. My great aunt (known as Sadie) and my cousin's daughter are both Sarah. It's just so... zzzzzz!

I do not like the word hate... but I have a strong passionate (irrational) dislike for Sean. I love irish names and their traditional spelling, but this for some reason feels like nails on a chalkboard! Shawn is just fine (NMS) but spelling it Sean literally makes me cringe (I have learned to control it so it comes out more like a eye twitch lol.)

There are others I do not understand, but do not have the same strong reaction Sean gets... Gemma and Imogen. I am sure there are more, they are just not coming to me.
I would not say I do not like common names, but I would never use them (my definition of common is the top 100...and any names I have heard used in the last 2 years in our small town) but those creative name and spellings get VERY OLD... though I have a double standard when it comes to MN and kinda say anything goes...

Joanna, Josephine, Jonah, Noah, Elijah, Isaiah, Judah, Jude, Jeremiah, Samuel, Rose, Mae, Clementine, Jemima, Romilly, Zoe, Chloe, Mia, Temperance, Concepcion...

Others bug me too, but those are some I can think of now.

General categories I've always disliked for inexplicable reasons are Jo-names and Biblical names ending in -ah for boys. Josephine may be growing on me a bit, but I still don't like the Jo sound at the beginning of names.

Lisa and Karen. I just can't imagine a pregnant woman thinking "Oh, my adorable baby girl will be named Karen! How beautiful!" They're just so boring and blah. Also, Madison/Alison/Allison, pretty much any "-son" name for a girl. I don't understand how anyone can look at Madison and think it's feminine in the slightest. Leonie. Uck. The sound is just so unpleasant (to me). Of course, to each his own!

    Leslie. It's just boring, sorry.
Max, Jax - don't like names with x's
Kate, Katie, Kaitlin, Kaitlyn, Kitty, Kaylee, Kylie, Kayleigh....how many versions are there?
I hate taking a name and trying to combine it with another to make it "original" like taking Ashley and making it Ashlyn or Ashton.

Woah, that's a load of names.

The names I dislike are: McKenzie (Mackenzie), Caoimhe, nor do I understand Beatrice (or Beatrix), Carys, Kara, Cara, Carissa, Karissa, Klara, Courtney (or Kourtney), Pamela, Lindsay, Sasha, Lisa, Karen and Sarah. Max, Jax, Jake, Benjamin, Justin, Gordon and David.

I think hate is a word that tugs too hard. It's too strong a word. In particular, the names above I'm not fond of, but I don't hate them. I never hated a name, no matter how uncouth, homely, absurd, apish it is. I never supported the hate either. To me, those above are just a little bit dull, unflattering and tad tedious, but I don't hate them. I won't faint if I see a girl Carys, a little boy Gordon, or a baby Jax.

It's hard for me to truly 'hate' most traditional names. There are definitely ones I would never use myself, but saying I hate a name like "William" is like saying I hate the word "orange". I might not like oranges and I might not be fond of the sound combination, but hate seems really strong for something so ubiquitous.

Most names I'd say I hate are ones I consider cruel as you're forcing a kid to shoulder the burden of a very difficult name--vast misspellings, stupid item names, sugar sweet crap, really made up stuff, etc. Like: Audio, Dweeble, Rockstar, Princess, Krystabelle.

There are definitely more traditional names that are downright horrible: Dorcas, Bertha, Lloyd, Floyd, Talullah, Hester. But I just don't think some names have aged well.

While I dislike the name Caleb in general (it's a name that sounds like you have a cold when you say it), it spelled with a 'k' actually infuriates me. I was at work the other day writing out a customer's child's name and he was like "no, it's with a 'K'". Kaleb. Why would anyone ever do such a thing? It burns my eyes. :/
    Favourites at the moment ♥
