I am absolutely shocked that people are pronouncing Mila wrong. Everyone I know would say Mee-luh. It's beautiful. It makes me wonder where you are located. BUT I don't want to tell you not to change it because you seem like your mind is made up. I just agree that this name will be more popular soon and people will know how to pronounce it (if they don't already).

I also agree that you can't let other people make your decision for you. If you both like Lucy for this baby (which you seem unsure of) then go for it.

All that being said, the only name that seems right is Ruby. So cute, so spunky. Ruby Elisabeth sounds great. I also like Eva, but I think more people will mispronounce it than Mila since there are two valid pronunciations -- EE-va and AY-va. There's only one way to pronounce Mila -- it's just a matter of enlightening people.

    Good luck!

I've had to live with people mispronouncing my name, Tara. It seems simple enough but some are deadset on "tair-uh". My mom hated it and it used to bother me when I was younger. I'm in my 20s and my parents still bicker (jokingly) about my name. Mom wanted to spell it how it's pronounced Tarra or Tahra. Dad felt if people can't pronounce it correctly then they aren't too bright and we shouldn't have to "dumb down" the spelling for them. I understand the frustration because some will pronounce it the way they want but those people really don't care about you. The people that matter will learn to say the name correctly.

I see both sides. I like the "proper" spelling of names but I don't mind changing the spelling (within reason) to make sure it's pronounced the right way. I'd keep it Mila but you could change to Meela.

And I loathe Lucy. I don't get the hype and it's a major downgrade from Mila. Do you like Mina, Minka, Misa, Mischa?

I disagree that there is only one way to pronounce Mila. Not everyone is concerned with the ethnic pronunciation of a name, some like myself, care more about the phonetic common sense pronunciation. With the male name Miles, Mila is the feminine version.

plato, I think that even though guilt maybe there it is something that a mother has to think about and she will have to work out how to tell her daughter in the future.

    Here is a good alternative

Mira, most people will pronounce that right and I do think she may become sensitive about it. I know a girl who is named Mariya which is pronounced like Maria, but she gets called Moriah all of the time and hates it. If it is a problem to you it will most likely be a problem to her.

Miriel with a nickname of Mila would be absolutely adorable. I think that you should consider something that is close so Mila could be a nickname.

Above: Why does she need to tell her daughter? I don't think she does. But if she does, she will tell her the reasons and the daughter will likely be happy with the choice because it was what mom decided was best.

The daughter will most likely find out whether she tells her or not.

Mila is not the feminine version of Miles; they are completely different names and have nothing to do with one another. Although phonetics oftentimes don't apply to names because names come from all over the world, strictly/phonetically speaking, Miles is said with a long "i" because of the "e." Mila does not have that "e."

We will agree to disagree. Note that I said that it has two acceptable pronunciations, Im not saying its only Myla.

What about Attie? I so very much love that name infact I got it from you. You said it was a relatives name and it's fool proof on the pronunciation. Mattie is also adorable
