    Baby girl coming thursday!

    Hi everyone,
We are expecting our second baby on thursday and still undecided about her name! Her older brother (Noé Ilan) wants to name her Alice and while we're not sure about letting our 2 yo name the baby we like the idea of using it as a middle name if it goes well with her first name. Right now our top two contenders are Eloïse and Mathilde. We are looking for a french name (we are a bilingual family currently living in the middle east but kids will go to french school here and permanent home is in a french speaking country.) My idea was to choose between Mathilde Eloïse and Eloïse Mathilde but her father wants to save the other for number 3 (!)

I love Eloïse but I'm having a hard time finding a middle name that I like. What do you think : Mathilde Alice or Eloïse Something? A few ideas but no loves include Eloïse Alix and Eloïse Eve. Could we get away with Eloïse Alice?

Alice would be pronounced the french way - ah LEECE. Our last name is french, 2 syllables and ends in the ah sound.

    Thanks!

Congratulations on your daughter. I think with your sons name, Mathilde Alice would be a good choice. Something about the two together sounds nice. How do you pronounce Mathilde? Is it the same as Matilda, or are certain sounds different? Either way, I think that sounds like a pretty, strong combination.
    Best of luck!

For whatever it's worth, here's an altogether different idea ...

    Axelle [and] Noe

Axelle [feminine] = French form of Hebrew Absalom
Noe [masculine] = French form of Hebrew Noah

... a sibset comprised of French versions of Hebrew names meaning "peace".

Thanks for your comments! We pronounce Mathilde ma TEELD.

I actually thought about the peace theme too ;-) I initially wanted to call her Salomé but dh wasn't keen. I think I prefer Axel for a boy to Axelle for a girl though.

I think Mathilde Alice is lovely, Eloise Alice not so much if you are doing the -leese ending since Eloise also ends with a -eee sound, it sounds funny imo. I prefer Matilda....

I'm not a fan of Axelle, mainly because in America an Ax is what you use to chop down trees...... not a very nice name for a kid imo

    Eloïse Alice sounds lovely

I think Mathilde Alice would run together and sound like Mathilda Lise

I love both Eloise Eve and Eloise Alice. The French prononciation makes it even prettier

I love Mathilde Alice! That's absolutely beautiful -- and your son helps name the baby, which I think is really sweet. (Especially as he picked a beautiful and usable name! I know two-year-olds invited to help name siblings who came up with Minnie Mouse.)
