Hating first names and how you'd react if your kid hated the name you picked

I found out awhile ago that my Grandpa's name is actually Donald!!! He always goes by his middle Gene, that I grew up thinking it was Gene, tell my dad said nope it's Donald and that's why my Uncle Ron, was named Ronald because he hated his name so much, he didn't pass it on to his son. I thought that was interesting and funny!

I also discovered that my cousin Shelly's real name is Amanda and know one knows where Shelly came from, but she HATES Amanda. We've been calling her Shelly since she was 5ish.

So I was curious as to if anyone else on here hates their name or if they know someone who does and what they choose to be called and why?

Also I was wondering how the parents or how you would feel if your kid hated the name you chose?

I know I'd probably be heartbroken if my kid didn't like the name I chose. My cousin's parents don't care since they call her Shelly all the time. I don't know about my grandpa's parents....

I know people who hate their full name and use a nn almost exclusively, like a Victoria that only goes by Vicky. I've never known anyone who hates their first name, though I guess unless it was someone I was close to I wouldn't even know that, say, Sam wasn't even their real first name and it was actually Kelly; if they introduced themselves as Sam then I'd know them only as Sam.

I think it's inevitable some people will hate their name, I hated my middle name for ages when I was a kid because I thought it was an old lady name (the only person I knew who had it as their first name was a friend of my grandma's) but now I've grown to appreciate it and will likely pass it on to a daughter. Different people have different styles, and if you've got a different style to your parents (classic vs surname names, for example) you might not like that your name's in a style you wouldn't have chosen yourself.

I almost hate mine. I'm going to legally change it sometime soon. I'm currently searching for a new one.
I've grown to accept it a bit, but I'm extremely unhappy with it. I do like that I'm the only one I've known for 16 years, then I met two others, but they spelled it completely different. Since then, which was 3 years ago, I've never met another.

My grandmother hated her first name, Grace, and never went by it. She also hated her parents, so I don't think she cared what they thought.

I know a few. My great Aunt Jody, whose like 70 something, has been Jody since I can remember. My mom knows her as Jody. I was going through my geneology and found that her real name is Lula Josephine. She HATES Lula, hates Josephine, hates Jody, but loves Jo. She can't get anyone to call her Jo, and has settled for Jody. She was born at a time when names like Lola, Lula, Annie, and whatnot were popular so I don't understand her hate for it, and Lula is totally her name. Her personality fits with Lula tons more than with Jody or Jo. My grandma said she'd beat me if I ever called her Lula. >.<

Also, I have a cousin who only goes by Thumper. I just recently found out that his name is actually Theodore. I don't think anyone knows him by anything but Thumper.

My grandmother hates her middle name. She's Dana Lou. She hates Lou and wishes she had a more feminine middle name like Louella or something. She was born in the 40s so I think that was fairly common and her 8 siblings all have 1 syllable middles too, but she hates it.

I have a friend who hated her name Mari (she had two-syllable, similar sounding last name) and now goes by Marilee. She just up and decided that was her name in junior high. All of her teachers just went with it. That was her name in the yearbook, in class, with friends, etc. I don't think she hated her name, but her similar last name led people to mix the two up, or to transpose endings. That's why I don't get down on posters who are looking for the perfect flow in a name. It matters sometimes!

My name is Ashley (like 2/3 of all other girls born in the early 90's) and I don't really like it. I never felt like an 'Ashley'. Everyone calls me Ash. The worst part is that I once asked my mom what made her want to name me Ashley and she answered "because I saw it in the credits for Full House and we liked it." So it's not even a little bit meaningful : /

My friend's first name is Sumaya, but she hates it and goes by her middle name, Troy. Really, I think Troy suits her better, since she's an outgoing, loud person that is always happy, while Sumaya makes me think of a quiet girl who keeps to herself.

My name is Frankie, and I cannot stand it. I was made fun of almost daily for having a boy name. Also, if someone just mentions my name to someone who doesn't know me, they automatically assume I'm a boy. My parents named me Danielle, then changed it before leaving the hospital. I don't like Danielle, either, so I guess I would have been screwed either way. Another thing that bothers me is when people ask me what my name is, and I tell them it's Frankie, and they ask what it's short for... Nothing! It's just Frankie... -__-

When I was little, I adored my first name. I loved the sound of it, I loved words that sounded similar to it, and I loved that it had more letters than the names of my two closest friends. I thought that made it really special, lol. Then in jr. high and high school I started to hate it. My name is very common in my age group so I was frequently in classes with other girls with my name so my last initial was frequently tacked on to my name it differentiate me. Also, since my name was so common, people I just met would forget it and I would have to re-introduce myself to them. I felt like I just didn't fit my name and even went so far as to go by a completely different name online. I tried to get my friends to call me by my internet name, but none of them would.

Now, though, I'm back to loving my name. I love the meaning of it and I love that my mom spent a lot of time thinking and deciding my name. She picked it because she loved the sound of it, not because it was popular or famous people have it, and that makes it really special to me. I still run into quite a few women with my name, but I don't care anymore. I'll just have to make people remember me by the things I do instead of by my name

I also know a few "Jenny"s and an "Elisabeth" who hated thier names because of popularity. The Elisabeth I know even went by Lizard with her close friends which was based off of what kids teasing her in elementary school used to call her, "lizard-breath"!
