I agree completely. It would make naming subsequent children very difficult -- girls or boys. Since it's a family name, I love the idea of putting it in the middle with a fn of your choosing. Or even hyphenating with a different first part, like Anna-Miles.

The first thought that came to my mind was why not just use Miley? And everyone else gave great suggestions for Miles-sounding girls names!

I'm going to be the odd one out here and say that if Miles is a family name, I think it is okay to use it on a girl... in the middle spot. Previous posters make valid points about how hard it may be to name a future son. If you use Miles for a girl, what would you name a boy?

If it is a family name use it. We are using a variation of my Finnish grandmothers middle name as mt daughters first name. Her middle name will b Ryan after my husbands middle name that we love. A lot of our family prefers our other middle name choice of Caroline. But too bad! Use the name you love and want!! Miles is perfectly acceptable. I'd name her Miles and leave it at that.

Ryan would be our boys choice but guess what?! We may never have a boy nor may we ever have other children. So why not!!!

Hi All, thank you for all your feed back!

I guess the reason I am so keen to use it as a girls name is because the member of the family we are naming her after was Stella Maria Sarah Miles Franklin and it was her choice to go by the name Miles Franklin

I'm against Sarah and Maria because I went to school with loads of them and as for Stella, we have a close relative who is living named Stella who we don't get along with very well... So that has left us with Miles and Franklin... I do like the name Millie but there is one already in the family so it's also out...

I think Zoey-Miles or Zoe-Miles would be cute if you want to switch up the order of the names. Then you could still go with Miles or Miley as a nickname for her even though it's not the first, first name, if that makes sense.

Otherwise I think Miles-Claire is cute. Miles-Rose is a little too much word name and too much S/Z sound for me. Miles-Anne or Miles-Marie could also be nice.

Wait...you're related to Miles Franklin?! Oh, that's fantastic - I loved My Brilliant Career! But didn't she go by 'Miles' because she was a young girl writing at the turn of the century, and it was much easier to get published under a male pseudonym?

Here's an idea from out of left field: the protagonist in her first novel was called Sybylla. That's unusual and pretty, I think!

What about using something that relates to Australia like Adelaide, Sydney, or Matilda?

I'm really interested in what you think of this idea... Something like Sydney Miles could be really cute!
