Olive?
Olive is currently the front-runner for our little girl due in November but anyone I've ever asked about the name seems to hate it! Even berries, who I usually share my name taste with, seem not to like it. My dh and I love it because it symbolizes peace and life, but it sounds spunky and has the cute nn Liv. Seems not too popular but not too out there, which we like too but I'm wondering other's thoughts. Is giving Olive to a little girl an awful thing to do as some have suggested to me? Any parents of Olives out there? What type of reactions have you gotten to the name?
Thank you!

I LOVE Olive. It's quaint, spunky, adaptable, just gorgeous. Don't be swayed by others opinions if you love the name - they will love it once it's on your little girl, as they will associate it with her. Stick with it! Also, it's definitely getting more popular - so it's not so different that people will raise their eyebrows like they might with older names like Ethel or Edna or Gladys. (And Olive is a hundred times more beautiful than those names!)

I don't like it since it just reminds me of Olive Garden and Ollie Olive. I can also see teasing potential in the "Olive you" phrase. I personally don't like many word names though, mainly because I can just picture the word, so if someone named their kid olive, I'd picture her to be green and maybe a vegetarian..... just like I hate the name Sailor because i get an image of pop eye or a man in a sailor suit.

I'm not a fan because I just picture a green olive sitting there on a plate. Or olive green, which is not a colour I like. I also don't think it has a pretty sound, so the overall image is one of drabness.
That's just me, though; I think you'll find most people on here like it, and a friend of mine has just used it and had good reactions.

I'm sorry, I really, really dislike this name and I just don't get the love for it. Like pp, it just makes me think of olives sitting on a plate. It's also not a pretty sound. Olivia I like; I wouldn't choose it since it's so popular, but if Liv is what you're going for, I would strongly recommend that over Olive. Obviously this is my opinion and plenty of people seem to like the name, but every time I hear Olive as a name I get physically nauseated so I just feel like I had to say something. It also just sounds masculine to me.
That being said I think Liv is charming. Good luck!!

I love it!
I've had Olivia on my list for the longest time--I love its sweetness, its Shakespearean references, and the sweet nn Liv--and then I fell for Olive, and I nearly swapped Olive out for Olivia, but as a writer and a lover of literature (especially Shakespeare!), I just couldn't bear to lose the Shakespearean references, so I opted for Olivia nn Olive (and just Liv!). I do love the vintage charm of Olive, and that it has most of the nns Olivia still has, and how natural it is. I think it's great.
I agree, I'm curious to see if you have a MN yet! Olive Juliet and Olive Lenora were a few ideas I've been tossing around...
Good luck!Ashley
