For a shy boy, I would do something fairly mainstream. I was painfully shy as a child, so I loved that my name was super popular--it made me feel like I sort of "fit in", even if I didn't really feel like I did, in all other regards. It may not be like that for all shy children, but I would think it could be a plus. I think something like Elijah, Brody, Samuel, Henry, Gabriel, Charles, Daniel, Ethan, Evan, Jude, Patrick, Tristan, Caleb, etc. would fit. I think something like Elliot, Theodore, Henry, Charles, etc., would fit for a bookworm.

    Good luck!

There was a sweet and shy boy in my daughter's pre-school class named Avery. His name suits him so well.

I agree with this. My brother was really shy growing up and his name was unusual for the time and softer sounding (though it's much more common now) and I know that he really disliked it as a kid. I would suggest something classic or mainstream, like Alexander, Benjamin, Oliver, etc.

Avery - I love this for a boy
    Ezra
    Josiah
Caleb - lol, even though my Caleb is far from shy, but I do agree it's very "soft" sounding

I think names with f, h, and v sounds tend to sound soft. Devon, Gavin, Phillip, Hugo, Arthur,
