    Arya Ruby

So basically I am screwed, because my husband and I can only agree on one name for our second daughter, but I even have a few issues with it despite agreeing on it.

The name we have chosen is Arya Ruby- Arya because we both LOVE the character from Game of Thrones (and the name) and we just generally like the way it sounds (we both pronounce it- Ah-ri-yuh) and Ruby because that is my Great-Grandmother's name who I absolutely adored.

The only reason I have issues with it is that a few people have asked how it would be pronounced or suggested that the spelling is made up (which I HATE) the spelling is just Sanskrit and it isn't actually the same name as the Italian- Aria.

If it were up to just me, she would be Lola Ruby and if it were up to just him, she would be Lila Ruby- he hates Lola and I like Lila, but our first daughter (who is 1) is Evie Delilah, and I think it's too close.

So what does everyone think? Is it too hard or am I way overthinking?

I initially read Arya as pronounciation "Ar-ya" which I don't like. I think it would need to be spelt Ariya for me to pronounce it "Ah-ri-yuh" without it being explained..

I would push for Aria, truly. I know that Game of Thrones has made the name Arya very popular but to me it looks like Aryan race which is so very unfortunate.

I did find some places that listed it as Sanskrit but you're not pronouncing it right. Everywhere I found it's suppose to be pronounced AR-yuh. if you like Ah-ri-yuh, then you need to spell it Aria. The pronunciation you're using isn't correct for Arya so if you want Arya, you need to pronounce it right, and if you want ah-ri-yuh, you should spell it Aria.

I, personally, don't like it. I prefer Aria and would never have figured that Arya was being pronounced like Aria. I would have said Ar-yuh. I also think Arya Ruby sound fine, I just don't like it personally.

I pronounce it the same way you do, actually, because it is also the name of a character in the Inheritance series by Christopher Paolini (first book of the series is Eragon). He has pronunciations at the back of his book and he pronounces it the same as Aria. Because I read it, I have no issue with the pronunciation, but other people will. I tend to stay away from names that have multiple pronunciations. I do think Lila is too close to your daughter's mn too. What about using Ruby Arya?

I didn't think it was made-up, but I guessed it was pronounced "Arr-yah" on my first read (until you said otherwise). Sadly, I don't think I'm going to be alone on that. If you don't like frequently correcting people's pronunciation or spelling, then I would go with the Aria spelling.

Lila is close to Delilah, but maybe your family doesn't use middle names much (in my family, they almost never come up except when someone reads your name at graduation or some special, rare event). I'm inclined to say the similarity doesn't matter soooo much, but I understand your hesitation... Too bad about Lola. I don't suppose another similar name (Luna, Lula [as in Tallulah?], or Lilla) works instead?

I would also push for Aria - if your husband has agreed to Arya maybe he will bend on the spelling?

First, I love Game of Thrones and Arya (or Aria) is also at the top of our list so brava! When I began considering the name and asked a few friends and family how they would pronounce "Arya" each and every person pronounced it the same as "Aria". However, Arya does have the unfortunate connection to the Aryan race. Given that, I lean toward the Aria spelling not because of pronunciation issues, but because of the possibly racists undertones of Arya.

On a nerdy note, Aria is also Hebrew for lion. Crazy that Arya Stark's name is so closely connected to the Lannister's, eh?

    Best of luck to you!

I'd go for Aria because you are pn Arya wrong, it's ar-yuh, if you want ar-ee-yuh, you have to spell it Aria. Otherwise Arya pn ar-ee-uh looks made up or like you didn't know how to pn it....

One of my close friends is named Arya- same spelling and everything! No one suggests that her name is made up. They pronounce it Ar-ee-uh. I think Arya Ruby is gorgeous!
