Do you have any family names you would like to use?
My son's middle names (he has two) are after like, 4 people one my dads side of the family (all named James) and Edward is after my grandfather that was murdered when I was 13, so his middle names are very meaningful. For a girl, Johanna is one of the middle names we have picked out because it's a perfect combination of my sisters names (Breanna Joy and Hannah Joyelle), so that's really meaningful, too.
And they don't have to be a direct name, either, if you want to honor someone by using, say, Marie (it's a common middle name), you could try finding a variation of it - like Mary, Mariana or even Mairin (Irish).
Just some thoughts for you.

jean is a family name on my side. i lost my grandmother to breast cancer when i was 12. that was over 11 years ago but i still miss her. on my fiancé's side emily is his fathers grandmothers name. his moms name is kim lyn. we don't real have any family names that i like so much. i'd give them both a second middle name of jean if i could because my grandmother was special to me but I've been warned that 4 names is forbidden unless i have a boy (some stupid bad luck thing) so not really an option.

I don't think Ripley and Raven are that bad. Providing Raven is spelled the proper way. I don't really understand how you're saving your children from a name that might not suit their personality when they're older, if you are going to give them a virtue name like Bravery. Just because bravery is a virtue we all want to instill in our children, doesn't mean that word is a name that will suit all children. I think the virtue names you are proposing are just as alternative and "punk-rock" as the original too. Saying that, I happen to like alternative names. So I like a lot of your choices. But if you love Ripley and Raven more than any of the virtue names, go with them. It's better to give your girls names you love, than names you think other people will respect, or names that you think will reflect a certain image of them. Personally, if you feel a name will influence your daughters perception, and will grow into a personality that differs from their name and will thus feel disconnected (i dont really believe this happens much - i know a really masculine/tomboyish Daisy and it suits her just fine), then a virtue name is not the way to go. By defenition you are telling your child to be faithful or gracious etc. Idk, i just don't think it's the way to go.
But! If you really must go for virtue names, I would say stick with ones that aren't insanely alternative. Since your reasoning of choosing virtue name sis to save them from their names being too out-there and spunky like Ripley and Raven, don't choose something like Bravery. I really like it (prefer on a boy) because it's spunky, has that punk-rock feel, has a medieval (gothic even?) feel to it, and its strong. These are all things you're not looking for since you're switching from the original two names.
An alternative to Bravery could be Reverie, Serenity, Destiny, Charity, Mercy or Felicity

Was thinking... (dangerous pass time thinking!)
How about Amity and Liberty.
Reason being if your daughters want 'mainstream' names at some point they could go by Amy and Libby, which are very very cute nns.
Amity Raevyn and Liberty Jade (these MN match too as Raevyn is "black" and Jade is "green" so both have colour MNs)

When we named our twins, we came up with the idea to give them the middle names Bellamy and Amity, both of which mean "good friend" (or derivatives of the like), which we absolutely LOVED for twins considering they were going to have a best friend for life.
I see you already have Amity on your list, so maybe Bellamy would be a cool addition as well. Plus, the nicknames Bell/Bella and Amy would be awesome!
Also love the suggestion of Reverie. Have you ever heard of the blog Girls Gone Child? The family just welcomed twin girls to their family named Reverie and Boheme (They also have a daughter named Fable and a son named Archer). You could head on over to the blog to put a face to the name Reverie, and see that it is totally easy (and cool!) to pull off!
