I don't like Cooper. It's a matter of personal taste, but I don't like the current trend of using surnames as first names. For me Cooper is a surname, a brand of tyres, and a brand of beer.

I think both are lovely choices, but I agree with the others, Katherine is going to get shortened sooner or later. Best to pick a nickname you like now so that people can get used to that.

For the protagonist, my first thought is Eliza or Rose. She reminds me of the song Where The Wild Roses Grow.
