Honestly, we call one of our daughters "Lou" and it has no connection to her first name at all - we just love the sound on her as a nickname. It happened kind of spontaneously, no planning to it....

I think because it is a pretty unusual name, you'd be best off with a middle like Jack or Ray. Maybe your husband can think of a German name that's short, sweet, and somewhat more common.
