Both Amira and Amara have equal weight alongside Eliana, I think. Not too exotic or too simple. Lovely.
Would a Hebrew middle name work? Amara is amazing, with so many wonderful backgrounds and meanings, I love it too. Personally I would say use the one you love the most. Congratulations. :)

I know a 14 year old Ondine, and once people hear the right pronunciation, that's pretty much it. They get it. Her parents also nn her Deenie sometimes. It's lovely. Don't fret. :)

nn is nickname. Rafferty is the best match of all, and I personally love the nn Rafe for it too. :)
My Gabriel is brown haired, brown eyed, thoughtful, super smart, values family time above everything, loyal, caring, and he's a Gabriel, not a Gabe. People try to use Gabe, but he kindly corrects...
If you don't like the 'hillbilly' vibe of May, how about Daisy Maeve? Similar sound, but a short sweet Irish name.
