Yes, your friend's name is Luz, which is pretty well known as a name. :)
As opposed to Lux, which I think is not going to sound like an actual name to most people in the general population.

How about Violet Lux?
If you really do like Lux, but if some of the concerns people have expressed are giving you pause, maybe combining Lux with Violet works better?
(Maybe Violet Lux has...

Please keep in mind, too, that the 50/50 reactions to Serena Lux are right HERE on Nameberry!!
If approximately 50% of Nameberries, (people who LOVE names, especially unique and unusual names), do...

I really don't see any problem with the flow of Serena Violet. :)
Both Serena and Violet have smooth sounds, yet are different from each other, in a good way.

Not at all!
Serena Violet sounds lovely, in my opinion.
I also like Serena Lilac. :)
Like I said, it's just Serena and Lux TOGETHER that seem to bring negative connotations to...

I think Serena is a lovely choice for her first name!
By itself, it doesn't necessarily sound sultry.
Serena is a beautiful, classic, feminine name! It is very classy!
I didn't mean to...

Thank you so much for these lovely suggestions! :)
I really love so many of these!!
When trying to narrow down choices, what approach(es) do you suggest?
Focusing on a particular initial...

Thank you for your input!
Yes, I realize these names are not the same "style" as Marissa. :(
The problem I have is that my taste in names has evolved in the 11+ years since I named my first...

Do you really?! :)
I have really been crushing on the name Iris for some time now, and I know it contains "ris" just like Marissa has, but I was hoping the two names could work as sisters!
March 15th, 2014, 04:44 PM
Thank you! :)
I will think about that.
March 15th, 2014, 04:28 PM
I will definitely take your opinion into account. :)

Damara is listed on Nameberry as being of Greek origin, meaning "gentle girl". Damaris is listed as a similar possibility (the name of a woman in the New Testament who was converted to...

Thank you for these suggestions! :)
They're both beautiful! Can't wait to find out your final decision once your baby arrives! :D

I just thought of a few more name combinations:
Cyra Lux (not sure about this one)
March 15th, 2014, 03:09 PM
I think Serena Lux on a grown woman carries an even more sexual image than on a baby. It sounds like a stage name.
You know what? I just realized something. :)
I have been thinking about...

You're welcome! :)
I like Serena Ivy, but I think that Ivy is becoming more popular (ranked at #187 in 2012 in USA and 88th in England).
That's the highest ranking Ivy has ever had in USA,...

In fairness, the original poster did ask for honest opinions. :)
And I don't think this "commotion about poor Lux" would be happening if the word (or name) Lux didn't legitimately strike some of...

Oh, I just thought of a couple more suggestions. :)
Since you had Serena Violet as an option, I started thinking of the color violet, so how about:

Okay, I do get it. :)
I totally understand wanting your daughter's name to be unique (not just another "Marie").
You want something that will surprise people, but in a good way. Something...
March 15th, 2014, 02:31 AM
Yes!!! This is exactly what I've been trying to say!
I am truly sorry, but to be perfectly honest about it, I really think that this is the impression a LOT of people will get. :(
March 14th, 2014, 07:18 PM
I think both Serena and Violet are beautiful, and I could easily see Serena and Violet as a lovely sib-set. :)
I actually also think Serena Violet sounds pretty nice. It depends on your last...

Well, here is part of the problem.
"Luks" rhymes with words like "sucks" and " f_cks", making it ripe for teasing.
And, yes, perhaps the "x" is part of it, as well as the fact that "Lux" is 3...
March 14th, 2014, 05:23 PM
And I can imagine kids making the association "Serena sucks" because of the initial "S" in Serena. I really don't think that possibility is too far-fetched, unfotunately.

I am still contemplating possible names for a (not-yet-conceived) baby sister to a 12-year-old Marissa. :)
With older sister Marissa, what do you think of:
