A shame that you're hesitant about using Ramses - that one is practically my definition of a good, strong name. I really love it so much :) But I do agree that "...s S..." sounds between the first name and the surname can be tricky.
I also generally think that most names from the Norse mythology are strong and feisty (and some of them are very unusual).
here's some less common names I really love, perhaps 1 or 2 might fit your style:
Ramses is my husband's first choice right now, it may end up being the one because I agree, it is definitely the epitome of a strong name to me as well! Thanks for the affirmation about that!

His middle name will be Jay, I forgot to mention that on my original post.
I think of my favorites s strong warrior names: how about Hendrik, Thiago, Aurelian, Torben, or Jasper
So many great suggestions already! Sorry about any duplicate suggestions. Also, I agree that Peregrine nn Perrin might be a good compromise for you.
Caradoc (nn Cary?)
Roderick nn Rook
I think Ren (or Rin) would work as a nn for Perrin (or Peregrine for that matter). You might want to know though that Wren is a rather trending name for girls right now.
Oh I know :) Wren was on my 'maybe' list for girl.
