@bounceparty - Thanks for the new ideas. Yeah, there's a lot in here! I just keep revising the first message to whatever I'm working on! I actually think Idalia might be a new suggestion in here, over the past three HUGE threads. That's pretty amazing - congrats! We settled on a Baker's Dozen list, which has now been whittled down to 11. Hubby and I are just going to check in with the list again every day or so and rank our favorites, and then go back and compare to see what we really love (and what was just a fluke, ha!)
@ottilie - Thanks for the votes, it's ever so helpful!
@sleepysessha - YEAH! I'm pretty stoked. It looks pretty evenly split, names I like and names he likes, so I feel like it's a pretty balanced list of options. I'm glad we're just going to take some time to let them "grow" on us!
@jem - Hehe, I had to giggle when you said "Neverland" theme in the room. I'm pretty sure my house almost qualifies as Neverland, as many plastic swords and hooks we have lying around, and as many epic battles with Captain Hook as have happened on the couch or outside playset or...haha. Yeah, I've read the book and watched just about every movie remake ever. I actually love the Disney version, no it isn't the book but it's still ever so much fun. Peter Pan is one of the few stories that I love so much, I don't mind seeing it remade over and over and over in different ways. Thanks for your other comments, I'm collecting all the associations people come up with, and the comments in general!
@mclevine - Yes yes yes...middle names coming soon to a forum near you!
@joyfulmomto8 - Thank you! I'm pretty pleased that we managed to come up with a fairly balanced assortment of his picks and my picks, it's not just polarized one way or another with one of us getting stuck having to pick the "least evil" from the other's exclusive list!
@beca_wiseman - Yes! You're right, Wendy could be a nn for Gwendolyn. Hubby has been on the fence about whether he likes Gwendolyn. A few weeks ago I offered it and it FINALLY got him to come around to the "Gwen" names in general (though still no Gwenllian or Gweniera, sadness!) but then when we talked a few days ago, he said Gwenyth was okay, but not so much Gwendolyn. So he must realllllly be on the fence about that one if he says it's okay one week and then says he doesn't like it another week!
Oh, funny anecdote: When I showed "Mr. Sarah" the list today, he asked if Wendy was new. I said not really, it's newer than most of the options on the list but... and he was like, "but this was on the list I saw yesterday?" LOL. I assured him that it was (it even had its own little review!) but he must have missed it entirely. I asked if it should come off and he said no, keep it around to see if it grows on him. Strange man!
For anyone checking in on the latest, I've also updated the first message in this thread, but we've currently settled on this as the list to think about:
Scarlett nn Lettie
Violet, also possible nn Lettie
Gwenyth nn Gwen or Wendy
Amaryllis nn Rilla
Magdalene nn Dagny, Maggie, Meg, Magda or Lena
Magnolia nn Mia, Meg, Maggie, Lia, Nia or Molly
@ kashed22 & @jem -- Yes, there's Marilla Cuthbert. Also, Rilla was Anne & Gilbert's youngest and she appears in Rainbow Valley, though not very much because she was a baby, and in Rilla of Ingleside, which ended up being my favorite of the whole series back when I read them the first time. I always thought it was such a pretty name! I was kind of tickled when it occurred to me that it would work as a nn for Amaryllis. Gwenyth was my top pick two years ago and I've only just now gotten DH to come around to it. It will be fun to see how the list comes along! Thanks for the input!
We've been re-ranking the list every day or two (though we haven't yet today) and here's how things are looking:
So far, I'm liking Gwyneth (Gwen) best and putting it in first place. Amaryllis (Rilla), Scarlett (Lettie), and Magdalene (Dagny), are staying near the top, and Daisy and Wendy are competing for the next spot. Magnolia was near the top for a couple of days, but as I have come to the point in the process that I'm actually trying to picture a little "Magnolia" running around with my other kids... it just isn't working for me. So I nominated to "vote it off the island" and DH gladly agreed, lol. I'm kind of leaning towards Wendy as a nn instead of the given name...I might even consider Gwendolen/Gwendolyn for it, but I'm still loving Gwyneth the most. Daisy is gaining, it IS so sweet, but I'm still on the fence about whether it's too cutesy, but I can see that one running around with all the other siblings. Someone suggested using Daisy as a nn for Adelaide and I like the concept/theory, and the more elegant full name, but not so much the Adelaide part. I know about the whole Daisy-as-pet-name-for-Margaret connection, but "Marge" represents an exceptionally unpleasant family situation on DH's side, so any of the "mar" names are pretty tricky. Awhile back, hubby did like Marguerite but not the spelling, so it never made the list. Rose & Violet are scraping the bottom of the list for me, and I'm ready for Willow to go.
Hubby is keeping Willow in first place, with Violet, Rose, Daisy and Gwenyth varying in rank following. He doesn't like the idea of Lolo as a nn for Willow, so that one doesn't have a nn option anymore. He also commented that Wendy might be better as a nickname, but he's not ready for it to vanish from the list yet so it's staying around for some more consideration.
Zora also got "voted off the island," as both of us have other favorites we love more.
I just watched 'Great Gatsby', so Daisy does seem charismatic and sweet, if a bit tragic, too:) Did you read the Little Women books? I believe the oldest sister had twins at the end, a boy and girl, and named them Demi and Daisy, which I always thought was great! (Demi was named the same name as the dad, and then they called him Demi, which was so cute till Demi Moore came along...sigh!). Anyways - it's great your system is working so well! Funny that your husband's list is almost like your list in reverse, and vice versa. Seems you may end up at your compromise name (from what I can tell) - Violet! I do think Violet, Scarlett, and all the Gwen variant names will likely be gaining more and more in popularity over the next few years. I know several under-5's of each! I do love Wendy as a nn for Gwenyth, though. My favorite is still Amaryllis, nn Rilla! I just love that and think it fits wonderfully with your other kiddos!
mousehouse7 - LOL, I know, it's ridiculous how we're in reverse. Violet is his top favorite and at the bottom for me so I don't really see it as a compromise name. Daisy actually looks like the compromise name at this point, as it has actually made Top 5 for both without being pet favorite of either. I actually thought Demi and Daisy were a nauseating set of twin names. I actually have wondered if Daisy will get a boost because of the new Gatsby movie. I haven't seen it so I guess I ought to check it out.
Or Wendy could be a compromise at this point too, lurking around in the middle of the lists for both...maybe it could convince DH to go "all in" for Gwyneth ;-)
Violet is getting pretty high on the popularity charts and Scarlett is rising, the Gwen names have such a long way to go they aren't very worrisome. Eve is a 500's name and pretty current on trends so I'm not overly concerned about the popularity thing, though I wouldn't want to go Top 20.
I wonder if hubby would like just Rilla...oh, phooey, there goes the Nameberry commentary pointing out teasing potential and ruining things. "Gorilla," really? Ugh, never would have thought of that.
@handsallover - Thank you for your top 3 picks! It's very helpful!
I knew a quite remarkable lady named Margriet (pronounced just like Marguerite)....I also like Maigretta (which maybe I made up, or maybe it's real..I don't know, but I like it!). I have also read somewhere, (don't remember where) that some member of royalty was Adelaida....I really do like Daisy a lot, but I see why you would want a longer name. Joely Richardson's daughter is named Daisy, and I always thought that family had lovely names all around....Anyway - if Daisy is your compromise name, I like it:) And the Rilla thing - Uff! I still love it, though:)
