What are the two names you consider to be most classic, for girls and for boys? By classic, I mean whatever your definition of the word is. For me, it is long lasting, familiar, established, and not unisex.
Girls: Elizabeth and Catherine
Boys: Edward and James
Ruth and Jacob
I think your four names are certainly classic.
Girls: Mary and Margaret
Boys: John and William
Anne and Henry
I would have Alexander and Alexandra up there instead of Catherine and Edward. My top four = Alexander and James. Alexandra and Elizabeth. :)
But there are so many! If I restrict myself to 4...
William, Joseph, Thomas & James
Elizabeth, Emma, Grace & Sarah
There was a good thread on essential classics -'Little Black Dress' names- a while ago: http://nameberry.com/nametalk/thread...-dress-names!? :)
Besides John and Mary:
Charles, Robert, Michael, and David
Margaret, Helen, Catherine, and Sophia
All of these go back centuries and have analogs in nearly every European languages.
I think a classic name needs to sound classy throughout a long period of time, but most of all it has to sound classy now. I respectfully disagree with pp's ideas of names like Helen and John. They are a bit dated, and I think they will be for a while. I would just be really surprised to meet a baby named something like that. They were popular for a very long time, but their popularity is waning so I don't consider them as classic. I think maybe these names are what I would consider as classic as it gets. :)
Anna and Elizabeth
James and William
I second the motion.
