I'm not a fan of Maisie as a nn for Maya because the spelling of Maisie is longer than Maya and they are the same number of syllables. That's one of my pet peeves.
Hi and this thread touches my naming angst. I adore Anastasia or Calliope names, but unless I can find a shorter name.eg, Ana/Stacey and Callie (Kelly) which can present to many people as a short recognizable name version, then I am not at peace.
Essie, Arie, Cato and Posey are darling names but in certain naming 'communities ' are as worrisome as Ariadne and Mariposa- whereas for family and Friends they work beautifully. This is a different take on nicknames.
So I look for Charlotte- Carla or Charlie [ just on overload with that one at present] Penelope- Poppy,
My experience is that there is a 'pet' name -just to differentiate, and the shorter version you can substitute when people obviously are not overly familiar with the 'Elegant' name. Wonderful when they coincide without being Penelope -Penny and Victoria -Vicky only.
So Mina, Vange, Checka are great 'pet' names but for me dont fulfil the need I have to offer shorter familiar version -which I absolutely adore too- well at least really like.
Names that have defeated me in that sense are
Ariadne -'Arie' is fine within Greek heritage people, other wise people think you drop your aitches.
Cressida - Sid, Essie -and I am not a fan of Ida.
Thank goodness for Jet coming back which can be used for Juliet. Apologies to all those who love Julie.
Apart from Ariadne, Amoret, Cressida, Athena, I have had a blank-happens when I am so engaged. Would love any suggestions if you have experienced this "Uh"
reaction to so many 'elegant' names outside top 100.
Mnemosyne I would love to use. Memory is a family trait -even what I am calling pet name ideas would be most welcome.
Thank you. O
