Maya and Mira are DEFINITELY too close, but not even due to cutesyness -- imagine how many times you'll misspeak with those! "Mira! Agh, I mean Maya!"
Here's a list of feminine Indian names:
Arya (which has been growing in popularity due to Game of Thrones)
Devi / Devika
Kala, Kamala (though this has a Battlestar Galactica association you may want to check on if you're interested)
---- I think Kamala has some good nickname possibilities, including a stretch to Maya if you really want it
Pallavi (this is one of my personal favorites)
Kyrin or Tara?
What does hubby mean by "long"? Just longer than Mira? Although I think my name- Tara- is wonderful (when pronounced properly) it may be too short. There's Tarala, Tarani, and Tarika, the nn could be Tara.
I'm not Indian but since name is, I have an Indian-inspired baby name list (that's why I love Lotus)
Lakhi- love this name because I'm not brave enough to name my kid Lucky
