John Alden is acknowledged to have been the first person to step off the Mayflower and set foot on Plymouth Rock in 1620; he later became an important figure in the Plymouth Colony. Though more common as a surname, Alden, which means ‘old friend,’ has been on the first-name popularity list for most years since 1880. Think of it as an Anglo Aiden.
