Hipster Cowboy Names

hipstercowboy

By Pamela Redmond Satran

Total props to Auggy for creating the list of Hipster Cowboy Names that inspired this post.  I love the whole idea, which seems completely right for our times.  Yes, there are cowboys – babies whose car seats are buckled into the backs of pickups for a day of roaming the range.  And then there are the hipster babies more accustomed to riding the L train, the little dudes who may wear jeans and boots but who’ve never seen a real live cow.

The Hipster Cowboys are a blend of the two types; urban cowboys, if you will.  These names combine the image of rugged masculinity with a more modern definition of gender and of cool. Some names we might expect to hear on young hipster cowboys today:

Best Boys’ Names: 10 stylish selections

Screen shot 2013-09-27 at 8.51.09 PM

Our new book The Nameberry Guide to the Best Baby Names for Boys includes many different styles of great boys’ names — including, well, stylish ones.

Stylish might mean popular…but not necessarily. More precisely, it means names that strike the right fashion note for the times, that are in today, and may be even more in tomorrow.

Like Pottery Barn furniture or J. Crew clothes, stylish baby names often combine freshness, quality, and broad appeal. It’s a difficult balance to strike, and no wonder that some of the names that achieve this magic mix go on to be adopted by many — some might say too many — parents.

The stylish boys’ names here are among the best in their class. Any would make a handsome choice for a contemporary baby boy.

cool baby names

Everyone’s always asked us what the cool baby names are.

Which is a much harder question to answer than it would first seem, as we discovered when we wrote our book Cool Names for Babies.

By cool baby names, do you mean names that sound cool, as in new, trendy, of-the-moment?  You know, names like Tenley and Bodhi, Indigo and Indiana.

Or do you mean which names are considered cool by cool people?  And which people are cool anyway — celebrities, fashion stars, hipsters, your friends?  These might include Blue Ivy and Justice Jay.

Or maybe cool names are those that completely ignore the concept of cool — they’re so cool they don’t even care if they’re uncool!  I’m thinking of names like Alfred, Agatha, and Steve.

But more important than how the world defines cool baby names, how do YOU define the concept?  Do you think cool names are names that are unusual or vintage names that have long been forgotten, names with personal meaning or those that are truly unique?

How would you define cool baby names, and which are your favorite cool names?

boys' names

by Pamela Redmond Satran and Linda Rosenkrantz

It was the Case of the Great Missing Baby Names Blog.

One of our most-read blogs of all time, a makeover of the top 100 most popular boys’ names, disappeared from our archive.  We didn’t even notice it was gone until a Berry wrote wondering where it was.  The girls’ makeover, also written by Elisabeth Wilborn of You Can’t Call It It, is still there.  But the boys’: stolen, zapped, vanished into thin air.

So we set out to fashion a new version, using the current popular boys’ names list of 2012.

These are our suggestions of similar-but-different names you might substitute if you like the original boys’ name, but it’s just too popular.
