world cup

By Maya Reyes-Solano

The World Cup has officially started in Brazil, which means the majority of the world will spend the next month glued to their TV screens, filled with patriotic pride- even in countries like the US, where soccer is slowly building a fan base. I highly suggest everyone watch because it’s a fairly simple sport to understand, fun to watch and the players, well, they aren’t terrible to look at. The favorites to win, in case you were wondering, are Germany and host country Brazil.

World Cup promotion aside, football/soccer is the world’s sport and with 32 countries from all corners of the earth involved in the finals, so interesting names are just waiting to be discovered.  The full rosters, with both first and surnames included can be found on Fifa’s website, but some of the best are listed below. And you’ll find that some of the most popular naming trends in the U.S. are reflected on the rosters of several countries: Italian variations of our Top 100, Roman names, place names, and other trends can all be found on footballers.

Confession: I’ve been Twitter-stalking Kendra Wilkinson.

The reality star and her football-playing husband Hank Baskett III have welcomed a baby girl, a little sister for Hank IV.  Normally I’d wait patiently for the name announcement, but a) Kendra recently shared that she’d shortlisted Maxwell until Jessica Simpson used it for her daughter and b) Kendra’s former roommate Holly Madison named her daughter Rainbow.

This could be a seriously headline-worthy name.

Kendra hinted the couple has a favorite, and it is something along the lines of Maxwell – familiar, but usually reserved for boys.  I’ve been pouring over the Geezer Names for Girls list ever since.  Lyle? Chauncey? Rudy? Jules?  Or is something more obvious, like Addison or Ashton, names mentioned by the couple previously.

After talking about Sophia and Noah for days, I’m ready for something unexpected.

Congrats to Kim and Kanye on the arrival of their daughter!  There’s been no name announcement as of Sunday night.  Is the couple still deciding, or have they realized that delaying the name announcement can generate twice the headlines?

Let’s give the famous duo the benefit of the doubt and assume that they’re still deliberating.  If Kimye is stumped, they’re not the first parents to find themselves uncertain about The Name.

Could they be stuck because they’ve limited themselves to K names?  Or have they fallen for a choice that doesn’t start with K and fret that breaking with the family tradition might cause problems?

While we wait to learn the name of the newest member of the Kardashian family, let’s check out the other baby names in the news this week:

Poppy – Speaking of delayed baby name announcements, Stephen Moyer finally revealed the names of his twins with Anna Paquin.  Daughter Poppy’s name is popular throughout much of the English-speaking world, but rare in English.  It’s also a nice connection to Lilac, Stephen’s daughter from a previous relationship.
