Easter Names: From Acacia to Pascal

easter1

It’s time again for our annual Easter basketful of names—those that relate directly to the holiday and relevant biblical personages, Easter nature names and names that suggest rebirth.

NAMES OF THE HOLIDAY

Easter – Less common than Christmas but definitely a holiday name that works in its plain English version.

Parasha – A Russian girls’ name that means “born on Good Friday.”

Pascal etc. – There are many attractive versions of this name. The French Pascal, for boys, and Pascale for girls is especially appealing. The Spanish versions are Pascual and Pascuala; Italian is Pasquale.

Pascoe – English twist (Cornish, technically) on the Easter name popular in medieval times. Pasco is another spelling.

Sunday This day name somehow seems best related to the Easter holiday and season.

NAMES OF EASTER PERSONAGES

James, John and Peter – Prayed in the garden with Jesus (but fell asleep)

Joanna – Lesser known Biblical personage who was one of the women at Jesus’ tomb.

Joseph of Arimathea – According to the Bible, wrapped the body of Jesus in a clean shroud and placed it in his own tomb.

Mary Magdalene – The prime female figure in the Easter story, she witnessed the crucifixion, accompanied the body to the tomb, and later with the other women discovered the Resurrection. A saint, she is a symbol of penitence. Her name means “from Magdala.”

Nameberry Picks: 12 Best Bunny Names

bunny5

After we saw Elisabeths’s darling bunny products in the new nameberry style column last week,  our thoughts naturally hopped right over to the area of rabbit names.

Bunny rabbits—the cute and the caustic– have populated children’s stories and cartoons from Beatrix Potter’s Flopsy, Mopsy and Cottontail to Uncle Wiggily and B’rer Rabbit to Walt Disney’s first character Oswald the Lucky Rabbit and then Thumper to Bugs Bunny to Runaway Bunny all the way to the voluptuous Jessica Rabbit in Who Killed Roger Rabbit, who was a rabbit in name only.

A lot of these characters didn’t have actual names, or if they did, they weren’t baby-appropriate, but we burrowed through books, comics and cartoons, movies, television shows, and video games, and came up with our Nameberry Picks of 12 Best Bunny Names:

Benjamin Bunny, a Beatrix Potter character

Cecily Parsley, from another Beatrix Potter story

Harvey, James Stewart’s imaginary six-foot friend in the eponymous movie

Hazel from Watership Down by Richard Adams–the gentle oldie that Julia Roberts jumpstarted interest in

Ivory Monroe, from the comic By the Tail

If you’re looking for a theme for your baby-to-be’s nursery, you could do worse than factoring into your name decision those that have animal themes. (I’ll bet half the little boys named Jonah, for instance,  have at least one whale on their walls.)

I’m talking mostly about names that refer to a specific animal in their meanings, as well as some literary and pop culture characters.  There are some caveats though–I mean does Portia really want to be reminded constantly that her name is related to ‘pig’ or that Clifford is eternally a big red dog?

That aside, here are some of the more appealing names and the beasts they’re associated with:

DEER, DOES, FAWNS, GAZELLES
AYELET, BAMBI, CLARICE, DARBY, DOE, DORCAS, DYANI, FAWN, HART, HERSHEL, NIABI, OISIN, ORHRAH/ORPAH, PAKUNA, ROSCOE, TABITHA, ZVI

ELEPHANTS
BAYLOR, CELESTE, GANESHA, HATHI, HORATIO, HORTON, KALA, NELLIE, POM, SHEP, TAJ, WINIFRED

HORSES
AHEARNE, ALFONSO, ARION, BAYARD, CADOC, COLT, DESTRY, EACHNA/EACHANN, FLICKA, HIPPOLYTE, MARSHALL, NARA, PHILIP/PHILIPPA/PHILIPPE, ROSALIND, ROSAMOND
