Most Popular Names 2010: Henry edges out Finn for Number 1 boy name
Posted December 21st, 2010

On the boys’ side of nameberry’s Most Popular Names 2010, Henry edged out Finn to hang onto the Number 1 place that it’s held for most of the year. If you count related names such as Finnian and Finnegan, however, the Finn family would be Number 1.
Oliver, the Number 1 boys’ name in England but only Number 98 on the U.S. list, is in third place on the nameberry count and Jasper and Milo are the fastest risers in the boys’ Top 10.
Nameberry’s Most Popular Names 2010 list counts the number of times visitors to our site searched each name throughout the year, which we like to think gives the discerning baby namer an excellent insight into which names are attracting the most buzz. Our individual name pages received 4.5 million views in 2010, with top name Henry garnering nearly 10,000 searches. About two-thirds of our visitors are from the U.S., with another 20 percent from Canada, Australia, and the U.K.
None of our boys’ Top 10 are on the national Top 10. The fashionable classic James is Number 11 on our list but only 18 on the U.S. popularity list.
The fastest rising boys’ names are marked with an asterisk and include Sebastian, Sawyer, Declan, Silas, and Beckett.

Yay James!
I know it may be a bit popular but I love it. I also really like Finn, Jude, Jasper, Liam, Miles, Declan, Eli, Elliot, Colin, Callum, and Patrick.

I wonder how many berry’s will have kids names Henry and Charlotte now? Actually those sound incredibly good together anyway haha.

Argh, Liz, I always do that. Lucky I was ready (know I always do that) with the next down on the list. Sorry it’s the attractive but relatively boring Daniel!

My lovely Rufus is 87! See, I knew I wasn’t crazy.
Lucky for me my other boy favorites aren’t up there yet, no Clarence, no Cosmo, no Remy, no Bruno, no Barnaby. Huzzah!
There are some up there I’d love to see more of: Magnus, Arlo (adore Arlo!), Hugo, Arthur & Oscar. I’m rather amazed to find Leo so high, but pleased too. It’s been my favorite name since I was little. So many lovely names up there! Ooh, I hope I get to meet more of them!

I have a 3 year old Henry. And I did like Charlotte for his 5 year old sister, but my husband wasn’t keen at the time.
My husband’s pick for our new baby, if we have a boy, isn’t on this list.
I do like a lot of these though – Oliver was also at the top of my list for Henry’s name.

Bah! Humbug! as I type this, my year-old Henry is sitting next to me trying to fit the remote control into the cardboard paper towel tube. And I thought he was going to be so unique! (As one of a hundred million Jens born in 1972, unique was important to me.)

I’m totally not surprised by any of these
. But that’s a good thing because they are all such wonderful names! Our pick for our little boy (due next month) is Jude, which I’m not surprised is so high on this list. Nameberries did help us pick it out. But I also don’t think that I’m going to meet a mass abundane of Jude’s in the next couple of years. The Berries’ taste in names takes a little while to hit the mainstream (most of the time).

Kristi is right, just becuase they’re high on this list doesnt mean that next year they’ll be all over the place in real life. Dashiell is number 25 and we’ve hardly met anyone who’s ever heard of it, let along actually met another one.
Finn is my favorite boys name by far, and I’m not letting this deter me. All it means is that people with good taste like it.

You’re absolutely right, Lyndsay! This is not the general popularity list but the list of names that are most liked among people who care a lot about names!

I have a 9 year old Henry and run across the name in all age groups surrounding his age. At the time we thought we had a nice fusty, spellable, no-one-else-has-it-name. HA! At least we did not fall in love with Caden or Jaxon! For the moment none of his brothers names are on the list!

I’m quite surprised that my top name isn’t on here. Well, hopefully that just means it will stay undiscovered for a while yet.

Yay! None of my top boys’ favorites (at least the ones we’re considering using) are on this list. You do have Gideon and Elliot, which I love, but I think we’ve ruled them out already for other reasons. You don’t have our son’s name (Julius) or our favorites for boy #2 (currently Wesley, Frederick, Theodore/Teddy, or Simon) — although Julian and just Theo are up there.
I’m glad to see Graham, Arthur, and Gideon getting more notice. I’m a little surprised by Liev.

So stinking mad about Finn being so popular. Hate Glee!!!

A really good tool is the popularity rankings, which shows some of these falling off, so a safer bet that they won’t be trendy, but others that recently have shot up, like #99 Graham. Even though it’s all the way at the bottom of this list, I have a strong feeling it will be very popular in a few years (when I start to have kids). Makes me so sad! I love that name (especially the Graham Greene connection).

Finn was a contender when I was pregnant with our son about 3 years ago… kind of glad my husband’s sister laughed out loud when we said it and made me think twice about naming my son something half his family would mock. Although hopefully now they are at least aware that it’s actually a name… they don’t get out much. I would say thanks to “Glee” that one is probably going to majorly rise off as well as on nameberry.

I’m suprised to see Silas, my two and a half week old’s name, is on here.

James, Silas, Benjamin, John, Vincent, and Daniel are all on my short list, with Benjamin likely to be the name of my next son. Andrew and Seth are among my long list. Luke (which I love), Lucas, and Asher don’t work at all with my last name, and I love Judah (similar to Jude). For various reasons, I’ve taken Levi, Ezra, Gideon, and Elijah off of my short list, but all are still great names. Michael is special to me as well.
Of course, most searched does not equal most used. I’m guessing more familiar names are searched less than more exotic names–people might click on Liev because they’ve never seen it before, but not bother looking up John. Also, if everyone who considers Milo also considers Miles, and looks them both up, but ultimately no one uses Milo and they all go for Miles, the names would still have equal ranking. And I’m not sure I’ve looked up any of these names!

My son is Henry and so far I’ve only met one other *young* Henry. It’s a bit upsetting to see his name take number one spot.

So sad to see Silas on the list! It’s our #1 for a boy. We’re expecting our first in July and it’s a girl so it will be a while before we get to use it. I hope it doesn’t go too mainstream!!

We are due with our 8th in November- and our first(born ’99) is named Henry. We wanted originality- oh well.
The rest of our kids are Samantha(’00), Maximilian(’02), George(’04), Mary Jane(’06), Frances(’08), and Jedidiah(’10). We are looking at frederick but it wil probably take off three to four years AFTER he is born and be number one as well.
What can we do?

Where’s Jaxon on this list? Jaxon made it onto the top 100 names on the SS list for 2010, and is rising quickly. But you forgot it altogether! Jackson may be falling, but Jaxon is rising!
