PRINCE NAMES

prince The other day we talked about Princess Names, but what if the royal baby in your family is male? Then you might need one of the Prince Names, and Charming is probably not going to cut it.

There are a handful of appealing names that mean “prince.” Brendan is Irish, Mael is Breton, while Vladimir is Slavic for “renowned prince.” Armel, the name of a Welsh saint who founded abbeys in Brittany, means “stone prince” in French, while Adhit is an Indonesian name with that meaning.

Prince itself is of course also a name, chosen by Michael Jackson for his son — though if you choose it, you’d have to put up with an awful lot of “formerly known as” jokes. Better bets: King, Duke, or maybe even Earl.

Fictional princes who might prove inspirational include:

Caspian – Prince who is the rightful king in The Chronicles of Narnia.

Edvard “Eddie” – Danish prince posing as Wisconsin exchange student in deathless 2004 classic “The Prince and Me.”

Erik – The Prince in The Little Mermaid.

Moses – Biblical baby raised as a prince.

Paris – The Trojan prince who wooed the beautiful Helen, though a certain modern female Paris may knock this ancient royal name out of the running for boys.

Phillip – Sleeping Beauty’s paramour.

William “Will” — The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.

And then there are the little princes born to actual royal families over the past decade or so, with William.html”>prince names equally imposing as those of their princess counterparts. I’m especially intrigued by Aymeric, Valdemar, Casimir, Marius, Emmanuel, Froilan, Felix, Baudouin, and Sverre.

Some other names for the royal baby in your life are-

Rex, Regis, Leroy, Kingsley (names meaning King)
Regina, Regan, Queenie (names meaning Queen)
or perhaps you’d like to consider Earline, Princeton or the name Royal ittself for something really different! Cheers.

Aw, I wish Paris Hilton would fall off the face the planet already!
Royal names are my favorites, from the fictionals, Phillip (only spelled Philip, please), William & Moses are faves. From the real ones, now this is where I get happy:

I like really, really old names of past rulers, like Alaric (I know two kids with this name, although one family pronounces it AL-uh-ric and the other uh-LAR-ic–both kids are very blond, very tall, and very beefy and don’t know each other at all), Pepin, Marcomer, Tarquin, Athanric, Eriaric, Theodoric.

Caspian has always held a special place in my heart, ever since I was obsessed with the Chronicles of Narnia in second grade. Would I ever use it? Probably not. But I love it all the same.

I like Caspian pretty well, though I think it would be a little difficult for a boy to bear (outside of royalty anyway). I love Scandinavian names, so those always catch my attention. And I am so with Lola…I truly don’t understand the appeal of Paris Hilton. She has totally ruined the name “Paris” for me. Can’t stand her.

Hands down, my favorite is Christian. I’m not at all religious; I like the name for its sound and its appealing variant on Christopher. It’s getting more popular, although so far I haven’t met too many guys who bear the name. I went to school with a Christian (who went by Chris), and a roommate I once had named her son Christian. If I ever have a son, that’ll be his name.
