Remember, the idea here is to come up with fresher spins on overpopular names, but what’s so clever about these name makeovers is that the new versions convey the original names’ essence, not merely the way they look and sound.

For Jacob, Caleb is a slightly less popular replacement — they’re both biblical, two syllables, and end in the uncommon B sound. Of course, Caleb is ranked #36, so it’s definitely not unheard of, but it’s not #1 at least.

For Joshua, how about Josiah or Judah?

For Anthony, how about reviving Timothy?

And for Andrew, I love the German Andreas or the Scandinavian Anders.

Fresh alternatives to Daniel, whilst still maintaining its Hebrew origin would be Chaniel (’graciousness of God’), Dekel (’palm tree’) or Deuel (’knowledge of God’).

The ultimate “makeover” name for Jacob is obviously Israel. It’s YHWH-approved!
