CRAZY CELEBRITY BABY NAMES: MEET BRONX MOWGLI

Rockers Ashlee Simpson and Pete Wentz had a baby boy late last night and named him Bronx Mowgli.

Bronx is, of course, the name of a down-at-the-heels New York borough, nowhere near as fashionable — as a baby name or a place — as Brooklyn.  Usually called “The Bronx,” it’s named after early Dutch settler Jonas Bronck.

Qualifications as a celebrity baby name: It’s unusual, unexpected, New York-oriented, and it ends with the hipster brand X.  And it’s sure to get talked about — a lot.

Brooklyn and now Bronx aren’t the only New York place names turned baby names either: We’ve got a whole list of New York baby names to choose from.  Astoria, Gramercy, Tribeca, anyone?

Baby Bronx’s middle name is Mowgli, after the boy raised by wolves in Rudyard Kipling’s Jungle Book stories.  Kipling invented the name, which does not, he informed everyone who believed otherwise, mean “frog.”

Little Bronx Wentz (say that ten times fast) is sure to have plenty of compatible celebrity baby friends.  Brooklyn Beckham, definitely, son of Posh Spice and DavidAlabama Jennings, daughter of Shooter and Drea deMatteo, and Kingston Rossdale, son of Gwen Stefani and Gavin Rossdale.  And the two Hudsons, son of James Barbour and daughter of Gena Lee Nolin.

And as one news commentator said, they can call him BMW. Another reason the name is way too contrived.

I don’t hate it. I’ve been to the Bronx, so I don’t know the neighborhood, but in sound, it’s not bad. The main drawback to me is that it is so hard to say with the last name….which makes the name feel like poor planning to me.

I think that Bronx Mowgli Wentz sounds adorable. People should stop being so negative and let it be. They’re the parents and if they like it, that’s all that matters. Bronx– too cute =]

I think its a cute name!! At least they didn’t use Mowgli for a first name. It makes a fun and inspired middle name choice. As for Bronx, it makes a cute name for a baby and I bet will be a cool name for a teenager too.

This should have been a “one-or-the-other” choice. Bronx and Mowgli are both odd, but they’re both reasonably usable, especially for celebrity parents. Bronx is a place name, and those are definitely in right now, as are names that end in X (consider Max, Alex, Maddox, and Felix). Mowgli could sound rather sweet, though it seems like an odd choice unless the parents have some connection to “The Jungle Book.” Still, it’s literary, and the middle slot is a great place to be more daring.

Put them together, though, and the name has no balance. It’s good to pair a daring name with one that feels more neutral. Bronx Gabriel Wentz would have been rather charming, as would have Christopher Mowgli Wentz. But Bronx Mowgli? No.

Having grown up in the Bronx, it’s kind of inconceivable to me that someone would use it as a name.

I don’t like it, that’s for sure! I also think that Knox is weird and that what Brangelina named one of the twins. The other is Vivienne, that I do like.
