THE SECRETS OF NAMEBERRY

I hate reading instructions.  If I can’t figure out how to do something on my own, chances are I’m not going to do it at all.

So that’s partly why nameberry is designed to be intuitive: Searching for a name, toggling back and forth between the lists and the individual choices, using its features is pretty self-evident.

But there are some cool things you can do with nameberry that may not be visible to the naked eye.

  • On the Supersearch page, which you go to every time you click on Search for Names in the left-hand lavender column, you can click on individual search terms — Meaning or Style — and go to the dedicated page for a deeper search using that quality alone.
  • Searching by Initial can actually take you much further than just the first letter of a name.  You can type in as many letters as you want at the beginning or end of a name and get all the girls’ names than end in -lyn, for example, or every name that begins with Ta-.
  • There’s more than one way to dive inside the site from the daily features on the home page.  Click on the name of the Namesake of the Day, for example, and you’ll go to the page for that name.  But click on More and you’ll see the entire year’s Namesakes (so you can find the notable namesakes born near your due date).
  • Have you figured out that if you hold your cursor over the popularity graph at the bottom of many individual name pages, it will tell you exactly what the name ranked in every year on record?
  • At the bottom of every Hot List, you’ll see a bright pink box that says “Jump To Another List.”  There you’ll find a drop-down menu of all the other lists that contain any of the names in the list you started with.
  • And if the Hot Lists aren’t enough for you, look for the tiny type in the footer of every page that says Even More Lists of Baby Names.  Click that and you’ll go to the full wonderland of lists, including everything from Aboriginal Names to Names That Mean King.
